The policeman demanding ECMR in a now-viral video has become the face of a growing controversy involving six officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The officers, including a Chief Superintendent of Police who served as their supervisor, are now facing disciplinary action for allegedly extorting motorists along the Benin Bypass.
The incident, which quickly spread across social media platforms, triggered widespread outrage and calls for accountability. In response, the NPF has taken swift steps to address the matter, bringing the involved officers to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the officers were summoned shortly after the video surfaced online. On Tuesday, a statement published on the official X.com page of the NPF revealed further developments.
The statement noted that the six officers, upon their arrival in Abuja, were taken directly before the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. The IGP strongly condemned the officers’ behavior, calling it “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable.”
He also directed that internal disciplinary actions begin immediately. This is in line with the police force’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct.
“Following the circulation of a viral video showing acts of extortion by police officers along the Benin bypass, the Nigeria Police Force, in line with its zero-tolerance policy on extortion and unprofessional conduct, has taken immediate action,” the statement read.
The officers involved have reportedly been issued queries, and orderly room trials are already underway for those most directly linked to the incident. This trial is a formal internal process used to determine disciplinary measures for officers accused of misconduct.
The NPF also noted that the supervising officer, despite not appearing in the video, would not be exempt from punishment due to his failure in oversight responsibilities.
