At least 11 people have died and 31 houses reduced to ashes following an ethnic clash in Gululu village, located in Jahun and Miga Local Government Areas of Jigawa State. The tragic incident, which unfolded last Friday, has left the community in shock and mourning.
Suleiman Abubakar Jahun, a Fulani elder who lost five of his children in the chaos, shared his heartbreaking experience.
“I was at home when people informed me of a fight between Hausa and Fulani communities. Upon arriving at the scene, I witnessed rampant killings, which were senseless and devastating,” he told DAILY TRUST.
Abubakar explained that his children were innocent victims and pleaded for government intervention, as he now bears the responsibility of caring for 18 grandchildren.
Another grieving parent, Amadu Garba Jahun, who also lost a child, appealed for justice. “We’re not seeking revenge or wanting to take the law into our own hands. We just want the authorities to do their job and bring us justice,” he said, emphasizing the community’s desire for peace.
The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has provided immediate relief, donating 25 bags of rice and ₦500,000 to affected families.
An additional five bags of rice and ₦100,000 were given to those who lost children. Dr. Haruna Mairiga, SEMA Chairman, revealed that the clash was triggered by theft that spiraled out of control when stolen goods were traced to a settlement.
Local leaders, including Hon. Jamilu Muhammad Danmalam and Hon. Bilya Dauda Garbau, assured residents of ongoing efforts to restore peace. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP AT.
Abdullahi, noted that a committee has been established to address conflicts and ensure perpetrators face justice. He urged the community to remain calm, promising enhanced security measures to prevent future violence.
