18 Injured in Port Harcourt Gas Explosion – Police

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed that 18 persons were severely injured in a gas explosion that occurred on in Oroazi community in Port Harcourt. The incident occurred at a gas refilling shop, causing widespread damage to surrounding buildings and sparking panic in the area.

The Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, addressed the press on Monday, confirming that the explosion was caused by a welder’s error. “Yes, I can confirm that the explosion was caused by a welder repairing a refrigerator,” she said.

According to her, the technician used a gas cylinder to weld while simultaneously refilling gas in the refrigerator, leading to the devastating blast. She further added, “No fewer than 18 persons, including the technician, sustained injuries, but fortunately, no lives were lost.”

Eyewitnesses described the aftermath as horrifying. Tamuno, a resident who witnessed the explosion, said, “The explosion triggered a chain reaction with other gas cylinders in the shop also exploding.”

He revealed that the victims included a pregnant woman, four children, a couple, and passersby who were caught in the blast.

Those injured suffered various degrees of burns and were immediately taken to the Rivers State Teaching Hospital for treatment.
