Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup took another hit after a frustrating 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom. The result was a disappointment for the Super Eagles, who had been hoping to build on their previous 2-0 win over Rwanda.
Nigeria started the match with confidence, creating several chances but failing to convert them. Despite their dominance in possession, the team struggled with finishing, missing clear opportunities to take the lead. On the other hand, Zimbabwe’s defense remained firm, frustrating the home side with solid defending.
The breakthrough finally came in the 73rd minute when Victor Osimhen found the back of the net. The Napoli striker capitalized on good link-up play between Tolu Arokodare and Ola Aina, heading the ball past the Zimbabwean goalkeeper to send the home fans into celebration.
However, just when it seemed like Nigeria would secure all three points, the visitors responded with a dramatic equalizer in the 90th minute. Tawanda Chirewa took advantage of a lapse in Nigeria’s defense, running through unchallenged before calmly placing the ball past Stanley Nwabali. The late goal silenced the crowd and left the Super Eagles frustrated.
With this result, Nigeria now sits in fourth place in Group C with seven points, trailing behind Benin Republic and Lesotho, who each have eight points. South Africa leads the group with 13 points, putting them in a strong position for qualification.
