As the group working to unseat President Bola Tinubu gains more attention, the All Progressives Congress has stated that the president will win again in the 2027 general election.
Bala Ibrahim, who speaks for the APC, dismissed the opposition movement as weak and without real direction. He described their recent gathering in Abuja as a group effort that is “dead on arrival.”
This comment came shortly after key members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, strongly criticized the Tinubu administration.
In a statement signed by David Mark, the PDP figures called on Nigerians and other party members to rally behind their new coalition.
“The APC government, which came into being on the false and evil propaganda to save Nigeria from PDP is now a disaster to our nation and therefore must be voted out of power,’’ the communiqué read.
The group has reportedly chosen the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their new political platform. Insiders at the meeting confirmed that some PDP members will stay within the party while openly supporting the ADC candidate in 2027.
“You see, in the meeting, we discussed the state of the PDP and how the party can no longer effectively lead the opposition,” one source revealed.
The coalition said it was formed not just to challenge the APC but also to revive national values like unity, security, and economic growth.
“All coalition partners must be united on the issues of national unity, democracy, national security and national economy and the political will to stamp out corruption embedded in our institutions,” the statement added.
Despite this effort, Ibrahim said the APC remains confident. “The fact that they are meeting in hotels or places at night without any fear means the APC government has improved the security situation of the country… they are not likely to give any fear or scare to the APC because they are dead on arrival,” he stated.
Meanwhile, PDP Senator Abba Moro described the meeting as a necessary political step. “These are senior and elder statesmen and political leaders in the country. I want to believe that they know what they are doing,” he said.
Segun Sowunmi, another PDP member, noted that the resolution of the party’s internal leadership issues clears the path for future planning.
“Now that the PDP has resolved the issues of secretaryship, the party is now able to concentrate and let those who love to meander about keep doing their thing while the party plans,” he said.
Sola Fasure, spokesperson for former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, also supported the opposition’s recent moves.
“The information from the coalition is that Aregbesola is the coordinator for the South West. So, nothing has changed. You can see that the coalition is coalescing,” he noted.
He also spoke on Peter Obi’s proposal for a single-term presidency, saying, “Every individual have their own dream and aspiration… There is no one in the coalition who doesn’t share that vision.”
According to Fasure, the alliance is not built on personal ambition but shared ideals. “It is not a competition. What Obi said is what all of them equally subscribed to.”
Babachir Lawal, a former SGF, added that the coalition was still taking shape. “The coalition is still ongoing. We will tell Nigerians our position.”
He also commented briefly on Obi’s proposal: “Politicians have their strategies and plans. It’s not an issue. Even Buhari, whom some expected to do just four years, ended up completing eight.”
