Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal visited ex-President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna on Friday, April 11.
The visit took place at Buhari’s private residence in the city. The news of the meeting was shared by Imran Wakili, a known supporter of El-Rufai, through a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Wakili wrote: “Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, together with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Aminu Tambuwal, and other dignitaries, visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his Kaduna residence. El-Rufai’s endless respect for Buhari is priceless, even with the best effort of Garba Shehu.”
The meeting comes at a time when several opposition leaders, including Atiku, El-Rufai, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, are said to be forming alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections. The trio, along with others, are believed to be working on a political coalition with the goal of challenging the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu.
Adding to the speculation, former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Adewale Adebayo, stated that both Atiku and Obi are discussing the possibility of joining the SDP. He noted that if they and other notable politicians adopt the party’s values, it could lead to the defeat of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
