The 2023 Labour Party presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, has announced that he will be on the ballot again in 2027, confirming that he intends to run for the office of the President of Nigeria. He also dismissed suggestions that he would be the vice-presidential candidate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Obi made this known during a live appearance on Sunday Politics, a programme aired on Channels Television on Sunday.
“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” Obi said during the interview.
When asked about reports making the rounds that he might work alongside Atiku Abubakar under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obi responded clearly, saying there was no such plan or discussion.
“This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C,” he said.
Obi noted that many rumours often circulate about Nigerian politics, most of which are not based on facts or actual conversations. He pointed out that his focus remains on running for president again, stressing that any assumptions about his alignment with Atiku were entirely baseless.
In the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi emerged as one of the top contenders, finishing third behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu, and the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar. His performance was considered strong for a third-force candidate and gave hope to many Nigerians seeking an alternative to the country’s two major political parties.
