The Labour Party (LP) has confirmed that Peter Obi will once again be its candidate in the 2027 presidential election. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, made this known during an interview on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television.
Arabambi stated that the 2027 election would not be an easy ride for President Bola Tinubu, who won the 2023 election. He noted that the Labour Party remains determined to challenge the current administration and bring Obi back as its flagbearer.
“Tinubu is not just going to have it very easy in 2027, we are coming back with that Peter Obi to them so that they will know we are very serious,” he said.
The announcement signals the party’s commitment to another attempt at securing the presidency after Obi’s third-place finish in the 2023 election. Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, lost to Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and also trailed behind Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During the interview, Arabambi also addressed the recent resignation of actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo from the Labour Party. He dismissed Okonkwo’s departure as insignificant, suggesting that his exit was beneficial to the party’s future goals.
“And we wish Kenneth Okonkwo well, his resignation is good riddance to bad rubbish. He should not speak about the Labour Party anymore,” Arabambi stated.
He further denied any internal crisis within the party, insisting that LP remains strong despite claims of leadership struggles.
“There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. Labour Party is not going into extinction. It is just a figment of the imaginations of most of our detractors,” he added.
