Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has stated that he is fully qualified to run for the presidency in the 2027 election but insists that he will only make his intentions known when the time is right.
Speaking during his visit to Fashola farm in Oyo town on Friday, the governor addressed growing speculation about his political future, making it clear that he does not need anyone to speak on his behalf.
Makinde emphasized that while there have been numerous talks and predictions about his future ambitions, they are unnecessary. He stated that when the time comes, he will personally reveal his plans, adding that he is old enough to make his own decisions without being influenced by others.
He remarked, “We didn’t host the PDP reporters’ retreat because somebody has a presidential ambition. No comment, nothing. But all I can say to you is, I’m old enough if I want to do something, I will come out and say, this is what I want to do.”
Makinde continued by recalling his political journey, sharing that his rise to becoming the governor of Oyo State was no easy feat. He highlighted that his earlier attempts to enter the Senate were unsuccessful, but despite these setbacks, he never gave up. He credited the people of Oyo State for taking a chance on him during the 2019 governorship election, despite his lack of prior political experience.
He stated, “Oyo State people took a decision in 2019. We did not have a godfather. Nobody sponsored me, and nobody gave me a dime for us to get in here, but the people of Oyo State decided we wanted to give this opportunity to an outsider.”
Makinde also reflected on the criticism he faced before his election, with many questioning his qualifications and political background. However, he proved his critics wrong by presenting a detailed development plan for Oyo State and gaining the trust of the people.
In addition to speaking about his political career, Makinde warned Nigerians about the dangers of allowing the country to fall into a one-party system. He stressed that for the sake of democracy, it is crucial to have a variety of voices and political parties.
“Nigeria must not slide into a one-party state so that others will have the opportunity to showcase their talents,” he said.
