2027: SDP Hosts Atiku’s Men, El-Rufai, Al-Mustapha, Others in High-Level Strategic Meeting

The Social Democratic Party (SDP), on Tuesday, hosted some prominent politicians in the country in a strategic meeting held at its headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting, convened by SDP National Chairman Shehu Gabam, brought together former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, a former aide to the late Sani Abacha. The gathering also featured Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar campaign organization.

Showunmi shared insights about the event on social media, describing it as a pivotal moment for opposition politics in Nigeria.

In a Facebook post, Showunmi stated, “Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, a key meeting was held by His Excellency Shehu Gabam, Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), with political figures including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, and Segun Showunmi, known as ‘The Alternative.’

The meeting aimed to review the current state of opposition politics and find ways to strengthen it for the upcoming elections.”

He also posted on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the importance of unity in the opposition. “A strategic meeting called by HE Shehu Gabam, Chairman of SDP, with HE @elrufai El-Rufai, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, Otunba Segun Showunmi. ‘The Alternative’ to meet and greet and review the state of opposition democratic engagement in Nigeria,” he wrote.

The meeting focused on assessing the challenges facing opposition parties and exploring ways to build a stronger coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
