A total of 24 out of the 26 members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), shaking the political landscape in the state.
The only two lawmakers who chose to remain in the PDP are Mr. Sunday Johnny from Onna State Constituency and Mr. Uduakobong Ekpo-Ufot from Etinan State Constituency.
During the House plenary session held on Tuesday, Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mr. Udeme Otong, read letters submitted by the defecting lawmakers. He noted that the members blamed their decision on internal problems within the PDP at the national level, especially within its National Executive Council.
According to Speaker Otong, the lawmakers explained that the deep rift in the PDP’s leadership had made it hard for them to serve their constituents and perform their duties effectively. He said the lawmakers relied on Section 109(1)(g) of the Nigerian Constitution, which allows members to leave their party if there is division in the party.
The Speaker noted: “It is upon this constitutional provision that I have weighed your written submissions. You have each indicated that your defection is not out of political convenience or self-interest, but arises from a demonstrable division within the national leadership of the PDP. A division which, by your account, has affected party cohesion, disrupted policy direction and hindered your ability to function as effective lawmakers.”
He went on to say that the House must continue to stand as a symbol of democracy. “Regardless of party lines, we must remain focused on our duty to make laws and decisions that advance the interest of Akwa Ibom people,” he added.
The motion to accept the Speaker’s remarks and the letters detailing the lawmakers’ move to APC was brought forward by Mr. Lawrence Udoide, who represents Ini State Constituency. It was seconded by Mr. Bassey Bassey from Okobo State Constituency.
