27 Judges Under Investigation by NJC Over Alleged Misconduct

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has launched an investigation into 27 high court judges across Nigeria, accused of various forms of misconduct. The NJC set up four separate panels to handle these probes, marking a significant step in ensuring the accountability of the judiciary.

These investigations come after the Council’s Preliminary Complaints Assessment Committee reviewed 22 petitions lodged against the judges, deeming some of the claims serious enough to warrant further investigation.

A statement released by the NJC’s Director of Information, Mr. Soji Oye, detailed the situation. According to the statement, “18 of the petitions were dismissed for being either without merit, abandoned, or because they were still under judicial consideration, also known as subjudice.”

Some of the judges facing no further action include Justice Monica B. Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal, and several others from both the Federal and State Courts. However, the NJC has made it clear that the remaining 27 judges will be closely scrutinized by the panels.

One of the affected judges, Justice O. M. Olagunju from Oyo State, was also advised by the NJC to exercise caution in his judicial duties. Justice Olagunju had allegedly used inappropriate language in a letter addressed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, opposing a decision regarding the appointment of the President of the Customary Court of Appeal in Oyo State.

In addition to the investigations, the NJC has placed five judges on a performance watchlist due to their poor performance. These judges may face sanctions if they fail to show improvement.

This 106th meeting of the NJC, presided over by the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, marked his last before his retirement. Justice Ariwoola expressed his gratitude to the Council members and staff for their support during his tenure. Members of the Council, in return, praised his service and wished him a peaceful retirement.
