A 28-year-old internet fraudster has voluntarily handed himself over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Benin, Edo State, on Monday. The individual, whose identity is being kept confidential, has expressed a strong desire to leave behind the world of cybercrime and start afresh.
The man, originally from Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State, walked into the EFCC’s office in Benin City, where he voluntarily reported to the Acting Zonal Director, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE I Effam Okim.
According to a statement released by the EFCC, the suspect was deeply involved in a romance scam, a type of internet fraud where fraudsters pose as foreign nationals to trick victims into believing they are in a romantic relationship. The man admitted to using fake identities, often pretending to be a Chinese medical doctor working in a war-torn country.
“I tell my victims that I am from China and that I work as a medical doctor in a war-torn country,” the suspect confessed. “My victims are foreigners, who I deceive into love relationships. I communicate with them in Chinese using a mobile app translator. I profess love for them by telling them how beautiful and attractive they are.”
The fraudster’s decision to surrender was motivated by a strong desire to abandon his illegal activities. He stated that fear and the need for personal change pushed him to take this step. “I reported myself because I wanted to stop and turn a new leaf,” he told investigators.
The EFCC praised the suspect’s voluntary submission, calling it “rare and commendable.” The Commission also noted that this act reflects growing public awareness about the dangers of cybercrime and the importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions.
“The suspect, now in custody, will undergo further profiling, and appropriate actions will be taken in line with the Commission’s operational procedures,” the statement added.
Additionally, the EFCC encouraged other individuals involved in fraudulent activities to follow the example set by this 28-year-old and consider surrendering for a chance at redemption.
