The Yobe State Police Command has apprehended a 54-year-old woman, Hamsatu Modu, in connection with the illegal possession of a large quantity of ammunition.
Modu, a resident of Morami Village in Jakana Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, was found carrying 350 rounds of live ammunition. The arrest took place in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, following a police operation based on intelligence reports.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the police provided details of the arrest and the efforts that led to the discovery of the ammunition.
Abdulkarim confirmed that the arrest was made by police operatives from the ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters in Damaturu. He explained that the operation was the result of credible intelligence gathered by the police regarding a suspected arms trafficker on her way to Damaturu.
“Swift action led to the interception of a Golf 3 saloon car, and a thorough search revealed 350 rounds of live 7.62×39 MM ammunition concealed in the suspect’s luggage,” the statement read.
The arrested woman is currently being interrogated by the police, and investigations are ongoing. The authorities are working to uncover the extent of the criminal network involved in this illegal activity and the specific purposes behind the trafficking of the ammunition.
According to the police, the investigation will explore possible links to other crimes, including arms smuggling or insurgency-related activities in the region.
DSP Abdulkarim also highlighted the determination of the police to stop illegal activities related to weapons trafficking, emphasizing that the arrest of Hamsatu Modu is part of a larger effort to clamp down on crime and insecurity in Yobe and surrounding states.
