Comrade Murtala Olayinka, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kwara State, has called on labour leaders across Nigeria to engage in peaceful dialogue rather than confrontations with state governors over the implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage.
Speaking to journalists in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, Olayinka emphasized the importance of cooperation and understanding between labour leaders and government officials.
Olayinka pointed out that aggressive approaches and conflicts with governors would not help secure the welfare of workers.
He stated, “You can’t be fighting the government and expect to achieve your aims and objectives. Your sole responsibility is to ensure that the welfare of workers is maximally guaranteed.” He believes that roundtable discussions and negotiations are more effective in achieving the desired results for workers.
Highlighting the need for a strategic and sensible approach, Olayinka noted, “The era of lamentation and confrontation is over in the nation’s organised labour.” He explained that effective labour leadership requires wisdom and a cooperative attitude, saying, “It is not by banging chairs and tables that your voice will be heard and recognised as an effective labour leader. The labour system we are adopting today is one of using common sense and wisdom to manage the affairs of your members in the state.”
Olayinka also urged labour leaders to actively participate in governance by asking pertinent questions and understanding the challenges faced by their state governments. “You have to be part and parcel of the administration by asking questions to know the real situation of things. Through dialogue, you can achieve a lot for your members,” he said.
