73 #EndBadGovernance Minors to Be Reintegrated into Society, Says Kano Governor

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has announced plans to reintegrate 73 minors recently released from detention back into society. The minors were initially detained following protests in August 2024, but President Bola Tinubu responded to appeals from various stakeholders to grant them clemency.

Governor Yusuf expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for this decision, calling it a “magnanimous gesture toward the youth of Kano State.” In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor emphasized the compassion and understanding shown by the President in considering the situation of these young people.

The handover ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa, where Vice President Kashim Shettima presented the teenagers to Governor Yusuf. According to Yusuf, the President’s decision reflects a strong commitment to justice and to giving young people a chance to rebuild their futures.

“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his compassion in responding to the appeals from various stakeholders within and outside Nigeria,” Yusuf said. “Mr. President has demonstrated remarkable empathy and commitment to justice, and we truly appreciate his gesture.”

The 76 minors, detained in connection with the protests, will be flown back to Kano, where they will undergo medical evaluations and necessary treatment before reuniting with their families.

“In light of the gravity of the charges, we recognize the importance of offering these children a second chance. While their actions were regrettable, their status as minors should not deny them the opportunity to rehabilitate and contribute positively to society,” the governor said.
