Former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, stating that he believes the country will achieve greatness within his lifetime. He made this remark during his 88th birthday celebration, which took place at the Marque Hallelujah of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
During the event, Obasanjo urged Nigerians to set aside ethnic, religious, and political differences to work towards building a better nation. He acknowledged the current challenges facing Nigeria but remained hopeful about its progress. “I am an incurable optimist about Nigeria. Yes, the situation is bad, no doubt, but I believe in my lifetime, we will have the Nigeria that we will all be proud of,” he said.
As part of the celebration, two books written by Obasanjo were unveiled—Lest We Forget: Slavery, Slave Trade, Emancipation and Reparation and Nigeria: Past and Future. Speaking about his work, he noted that Africa must break free from the lingering effects of colonialism and slavery to achieve its full potential. “We have to shrug off residues of colonialism and slavery, we have to do this so as not be re-enslaved again after more than two centuries that we suffered the first one,” he stated.
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, among others.
President Bola Tinubu also sent a tribute, describing Obasanjo as an extraordinary leader who has played a key role in Nigeria’s development. “Providence has constantly thrust General Obasanjo to the forefront at critical junctures in Nigeria’s story,” Tinubu noted.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar called Obasanjo a “gift to Nigeria,” while former Senate President David Mark described him as “a leader of all seasons.” Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by his deputy, praised Obasanjo as a global icon whose contributions to Africa remain significant.
Obasanjo also took a moment to address speculation about his age, dismissing claims that he is older than 88. “Don’t believe anyone saying I am older than 88, that I am 90. My mother said I was born on Ifo Market day,” he said humorously.
