Police in Imo State have arrested a 36-year-old woman suspected of involvement in child trafficking. The arrest was carried out by the Quick Intervention Unit of the Imo State Police Command during an operation in Amajeke, Owerri. Along with the suspect, three children believed to have been kidnapped were rescued.
The police revealed that the children had been taken from Anambra State. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday.
Okoye explained, “The arrest followed a thorough investigation and an intelligence-driven operation. The rescued children have since been safely reunited with their families.”
During police questioning, the suspect admitted her involvement in the crime. She also confessed to working with a larger trafficking syndicate based in Onitsha. According to her, the syndicate targeted children from vulnerable families in Anambra and Imo States, selling them for profit.
Police efforts to capture other members of the syndicate are ongoing. “The suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the police spokesperson added.
The Imo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to fighting child trafficking. They also urged the public to assist by reporting suspicious activities to local authorities. “Together, we can stop these crimes and protect our children,” the statement emphasized.
