Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has described corruption as a “great monster” preventing the nation from achieving its full potential.
He made this statement at a memorial service held in honor of the late Justice Olayinka Ayoola, former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The event took place at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Agodi, in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday.
Justice Ayoola, who passed away on August 20, 2024, at the age of 90, was celebrated as a man of integrity and dedication. Obasanjo used the occasion to stress the urgent need for Nigeria to address the deep-rooted issue of corruption, which he described as a persistent obstacle to the country’s progress.
“Corruption is a formidable adversary that continues to plague our nation. It is not about whether the ICPC or Justice Ayoola performed their duties; it is about the relentless pressure of this insidious cancer we grapple with,” Obasanjo stated.
During his tribute, Obasanjo highlighted the remarkable contributions of Justice Ayoola to Nigeria and beyond. He commended him for his steadfast commitment to justice and his invaluable efforts in fighting corruption. “We celebrate the life of a great man who has left an indelible mark on our society,” he added.
Other notable speakers included Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who praised Ayoola for elevating Nigeria’s image through his exemplary service. “Justice Ayoola has left an enduring legacy, raising the flag of Nigeria high in every role he undertook. His absence will be deeply felt,” she noted.
The Bishop of the Diocese of Agodi, Revd Simeon Onaleke, delivered a sermon titled “Serving God’s Purpose in Our Generation,” where he called for legislative reforms to bar corrupt politicians from regaining power. He emphasized the importance of integrity, urging attendees to reflect on the type of legacies they are creating.
Justice Ayoola’s contributions were celebrated by a host of dignitaries, including the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hajo Sarki Bello; Oyo State Chief Judge, Justice Iyabo Yerima; Dr. Emmanuel Olanrewaju Ayoola; and Ambassador Godwin Adama.
