Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, has once again appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following allegations of mismanagement of public funds during his tenure. Sources confirm that Bello arrived at the EFCC headquarters on Tuesday morning, accompanied by his legal team.
This development comes in the wake of a recent Supreme Court ruling affirming the EFCC’s authority to investigate and prosecute cases of financial crimes. The decision effectively dismissed earlier challenges questioning the agency’s constitutional powers.
Witnesses reported that the former governor drove himself to the EFCC office in a black Hilux vehicle, showing composure as he prepared to address the agency’s inquiries. Legal experts believe this visit might be connected to the ongoing case against him, which is currently being heard at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja.
During the last court session on November 14, Justice Maryanne Anenih adjourned the hearing of fresh charges against Bello to November 27. At that session, the EFCC requested additional time within the 30-day summons period for Bello’s appearance. Meanwhile, the court granted administrative bail to his co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu.
Speculation had been rife in recent days regarding Bello’s planned visit to the EFCC. However, his media representatives declined to comment when approached for confirmation.
