The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Major General Olufemi Oluyede, appeared before a Joint Committee of the House of Representatives on Defence and Army as part of the process for his confirmation as the substantive Chief of Army Staff.
Oluyede, who was appointed by President Bola Tinubu, stepped into the role following the illness of his predecessor, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. Lagbaja later passed away, leaving the position vacant.
The screening began with a public session where the acting Army Chief presented his profile and responded to initial questions. However, the meeting was later moved behind closed doors for a more detailed and private discussion.
Chairman of the Defence Committee, in his opening remarks, emphasized that the focus of the hearing was not just on Oluyede’s qualifications but also on his strategic vision for addressing Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
He stated, “The task before us today is not only to assess the qualifications and vision of the nominee for Chief of Army Staff but also to establish a collaborative roadmap for tackling Nigeria’s security challenges. As a partner in the pursuit of a secure and prosperous Nigeria, this House remains steadfast in its commitment to legislative oversight and support for the Armed Forces.”
