Fire Ravages Idumota Car Spare Parts Market, Goods Worth Millions Lost

Late Friday night, a fierce fire tore through several car spare parts shops under the Idumota bridge in Lagos Island, causing extensive damage and destroying properties worth millions of naira. Thankfully, no lives were lost in the incident.

The fire reportedly began around 11 p.m., engulfing multiple buildings used by traders to store and sell spare parts. While the cause of the fire is still unknown, its rapid spread prompted an urgent response from emergency services.

Teams from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Nigeria Police arrived at the scene to combat the inferno and prevent further destruction.

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident and highlighted the coordinated efforts of the rescue teams. On the scene, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, head of LASEMA, described the situation:

“On arrival of the LASEMA Response team at the incident scene, it was discovered that multiple buildings used as shops for sales of car spare parts were found engulfed by fire at the aforementioned location.”

He also stated that no injuries or casualties were recorded, but the loss of goods and properties amounted to hundreds of millions of naira. Rescue workers managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and succeeded in recovering some valuable items from the affected shops.

As of 8 a.m. Saturday morning, firefighting teams were still working to extinguish lingering flames and conducting dampening operations to ensure the area was safe. Law enforcement officers were on site to control the crowd and maintain safety during the operation.
