The Nigerian Senate has directed the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo, alongside the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, and airline operators, to address the increasing issue of flight delays and cancellations. This development came after a motion was presented during plenary by Senator AbdulFatai Buhari (APC Oyo North).
The Senate expressed concerns over the growing frustration among air passengers, citing the negative impact of these delays on the country’s economy and public trust in air travel. Senator Buhari highlighted that flight delays and cancellations have become rampant in recent months, with numerous complaints being raised in the media and by passengers.
Recent data from the NCAA revealed alarming statistics: from January to June 2024, approximately 2,000 passengers lost over 19,000 pieces of luggage. During the same period, over 19,000 passengers were delayed for extended hours, causing inconvenience and disruption to personal and business schedules.
“This development is worrisome as air travel is one of the most reliable and quicker means of transportation,” Senator Buhari stated. He emphasized the need for stringent measures to ensure passengers receive value for their money and to protect Nigeria’s aviation reputation globally.
The lawmaker also pointed out that while the Nigerian Civil Aviation Act of 2023 includes consumer protection regulations, enforcement remains weak. Many passengers are unaware of their rights, including compensation for delays, which makes it easier for airlines to neglect their obligations.
The Senate has tasked its Aviation Committee to investigate the causes of these recurring issues and propose lasting solutions. Buhari further warned that the inefficiencies in the aviation sector could undermine Nigeria’s economic diversification efforts and discourage foreign investment.
