Major General Oluyede Officially Takes Over as Nigerian Army Chief

Major General Olufemi Oluyede, on Monday, officially assumed duties as the 24th Chief of Army Staff. The event, held at Army Headquarters in Abuja, included the symbolic lowering and raising of the command flag, signifying the transfer of leadership.

Major General Oluyede was initially appointed on October 30, 2024, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in an acting capacity following the tragic passing of his predecessor, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.

His confirmation as the new Chief of Army Staff came after both the Senate and the House of Representatives approved his appointment.

Reflecting on his military journey, Oluyede previously held the position of the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps, headquartered in Jaji, Kaduna State.

A distinguished member of the 39th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy, he and the late Lagbaja were coursemates. Oluyede was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992, with his service retroactively dated to 1987, and achieved the rank of Major General in September 2020.
