JUST IN: Court Denies Dele Farotimi Bail, Sets New Hearing for December 20

A magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti has denied bail to prominent human rights activist, Dele Farotimi, following his arraignment on charges of alleged defamation. The accusations stem from comments Farotimi reportedly made about Aare Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD).

During the court session on Tuesday, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ruled against granting bail to the activist, citing procedural issues. According to the police counsel, Samson Osobu, the bail application submitted on behalf of Farotimi was “incompetent and irregular.”

This argument was upheld by the court, prompting the magistrate to adjourn further deliberation on the matter until December 20.

The courtroom atmosphere was tense as supporters of Farotimi expressed disappointment over the decision. Farotimi, known for his outspoken advocacy on human rights and social justice, has previously faced legal battles stemming from his activism.

His legal team had expressed optimism that the court would grant him temporary freedom pending the full hearing of the defamation case.

Despite the adjournment, no details about the specific statements or actions leading to the defamation allegations were disclosed in court. The defense is now expected to rectify the procedural issues in their bail application ahead of the next hearing.
