Nigerians were once again thrown into darkness on Wednesday following yet another collapse of the national power grid. The latest breakdown marks the 12th time the grid has failed this year, a record number of collapses in a single year.
According to reports, the national grid went down at approximately 2:09 PM, as confirmed by a tweet from the official account of Nigeria’s National Grid. The tweet stated, “The major grid setback has occurred, and the restoration is to commence.”
This persistent issue has been a major source of frustration for citizens. From January to November 2024, the grid collapsed 11 times. In October alone, the system failed three times within a single week, leading to widespread power outages and public outrage.
The frequent grid failures have sparked conversations about the country’s struggling power infrastructure. Citizens and experts alike have called for urgent reforms to address the recurring collapses, which disrupt daily life, businesses, and the economy.
Efforts to restore power are reportedly underway, but many Nigerians remain concerned about the reliability of the system and the government’s ability to resolve these frequent setbacks.
