Ademola Lookman, the 27-year-old Super Eagles winger, was honored as the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year in an emotional ceremony held in Marrakech, Morocco. The award, one of Africa’s most prestigious football honors, solidifies Lookman’s status as the continent’s top male footballer.
The path to this achievement wasn’t easy for Lookman, who edged out formidable competitors like Achraf Hakimi, Simon Adingra, Ronwen Williams, and Serhou Guirassy.
In his acceptance speech, Lookman shared a deeply personal reflection on overcoming adversity, referencing a painful moment from his past—a missed penalty in 2020 that had once made him the subject of ridicule.
During a Premier League match with Fulham against West Ham, Lookman attempted a Panenka-style penalty in stoppage time. The audacious attempt failed as the ball landed harmlessly in the goalkeeper’s hands, leading to a 1-0 defeat. The backlash was swift, with then-manager Scott Parker publicly criticizing his decision.
“I’m disappointed and angry. You can’t take penalties like that, and he knows that. He’s a young player, and he’s learning,” Parker said after the game.
Reflecting on the incident on Monday, Lookman said, “Just over four years ago, I failed in front of the world. Fast forward four years, and I’m the best player in Africa.”
“I want to say to the young children and people watching this: don’t let your failures weigh you down to the point they break your wings. Matter of fact, turn your pain into your power and continue to fight.”
“Firstly, I want to thank the Almighty God for everything He has been doing in my life and for all His blessings.
“I want to thank the president, all my teammates, both club and country and everyone who has supported me with love.”
“This award today is a blessing to me, my family, and my nation. To be recognised as the best player in Africa is something incredible, and I’m extremely proud.”
