Ghana’s President-Elect John Mahama Visits Nigeria’s President Tinubu in Abuja

John Dramani Mahama, Ghana’s President-elect, made a notable visit to Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Monday. The meeting marked a significant moment for the two West African leaders, as they discussed matters of mutual interest and regional collaboration.

Mahama, who recently won Ghana’s presidential election with an impressive 56% of the vote, was warmly welcomed by President Tinubu and Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.

This victory signals a remarkable comeback for Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s President from 2012 to 2017. He defeated the ruling party’s candidate, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 41% of the votes.

During the meeting, the leaders explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral ties and address common challenges facing the region. Topics such as economic growth, security, and regional stability were reportedly on the agenda.

Mahama’s return to power ends the eight-year leadership of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo. Akufo-Addo’s administration faced severe economic difficulties, including a debt default and reliance on an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout.
