The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized the suspension of 18 local government chairmen in Edo State by the State House of Assembly.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the party’s Edo State Chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, the PDP labeled the decision as unconstitutional and an attack on democratic principles.
The suspension, announced by the Edo State House of Assembly, was reportedly based on allegations of insubordination and gross misconduct.
However, Aziegbemi dismissed these claims, stating that the actions were not only illegal but also a violation of the autonomy guaranteed to local governments by the Nigerian Constitution.
“How can a governor direct the State Assembly to suspend democratically elected chairmen of the 18 local councils for insubordination when these officials enjoy autonomy and independence as enshrined in the Constitution?” Aziegbemi questioned.
The PDP pointed out that the suspension disregarded a recent ruling by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, and the Supreme Court’s decision affirming local government autonomy.
“We are also aware that the Chairmen and their vice chairmen were not given the opportunity to defend themselves.
”They were suspended unheard, based on watery, trumped-up charges,” the statement further said.
Calling the Assembly’s actions an assault on democracy, the PDP urged the legislators to reverse their decision immediately and respect the rule of law. Aziegbemi also appealed to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the Federation to step in, stating that the actions of the state government posed a threat to security and violated the Constitution.
The PDP reaffirmed its commitment to upholding democratic governance and the independence of local councils, emphasizing that no government should act above the law.
