A Bayelsa State High Court has sentenced Mr. Prudent Oguruguru, Senior Special Assistant on General Duties to Governor Douye Diri, to three years in prison after being found guilty on charges of assault.
The case stemmed from an incident on February 20, 2024, in Agudama-Epie, where Oguruguru attacked Ubong Effiong Ubek, leaving the victim unconscious.
Following his arrest, Oguruguru faced a five-count charge, including conspiracy, attempted murder, assault occasioning harm, serious assault, and malicious damage. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
During the trial, the prosecution presented six witnesses and seven exhibits to support its case. Justice I. A. Orukari stated the key question was whether the evidence provided proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge ruled that the prosecution failed to establish guilt for attempted murder and other related charges in Counts 2, 4, and 5. However, the evidence for conspiracy to commit assault and assault occasioning harm (Counts 1 and 3) was deemed sufficient.
In his defense, Oguruguru pleaded for leniency, citing his role as the sole provider for his family and elderly mother. Despite this, Justice Orukari sentenced him to three years for each charge, with an option of a ₦250,000 fine for each. The sentences will run concurrently.
