The tragic death of 35 children during a stampede at a funfair in Ibadan has prompted the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to personally oversee the ongoing investigation into the incident.
The event, organized for children by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the former queen of the Ooni of Ife, and Ibadan broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, ended in chaos when thousands of attendees overwhelmed the venue.
Initially planned for 5,000 children, the event saw over 7,500 participants, leading to overcrowding and confusion. Six injured victims were rushed to local hospitals, while the tragic loss of young lives has left the community in mourning.
On Friday, Prophetess Naomi, who had been detained for questioning, reportedly collapsed and was taken to the Police Hospital in Eleyele for treatment.
The chairman of Agidigbo FM, Oriyomi Hamzat, was also admitted to the same facility. According to a senior hospital staff member, security has been tightened around the premises due to the sensitive nature of the case.
The Oyo State Police Command reported eight arrests linked to the incident. Meanwhile, sources confirmed that the Inspector General has taken control of the investigation, and further details are being handled at the federal level.
In response to the tragedy, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde canceled his upcoming birthday celebrations and announced measures to prevent such occurrences at public events. The governor described the incident as “unfortunate and preventable,” emphasizing the need for stringent safety protocols.
