Ghana has announced a groundbreaking decision to offer visa-free entry to all African nationals, beginning early 2025. This transformative policy was approved by President Nana Akufo-Addo in December 2024, fulfilling a pledge made during the Africa Prosperity Dialogues.
The new policy is designed to strengthen connections across the continent, as President Akufo-Addo explained its aim to promote “stronger ties across Africa.” It reflects Ghana’s commitment to advancing regional integration and boosting economic collaboration within Africa.
This move is expected to significantly enhance tourism, trade, and travel in the country. Many experts have long argued that visa restrictions have acted as barriers, limiting the potential for growth in these sectors.
By eliminating such hurdles, Ghana hopes to encourage increased economic activity and foster cultural exchange among African nations.
Previously, Ghana offered visa-free entry to citizens of 26 African nations and issued visas on arrival to travelers from 25 others. Only two African countries required prior visa applications.
With this latest decision, Ghana becomes the fifth African country—joining Rwanda, Seychelles, Gambia, and Benin—to grant visa-free access to all African passport holders.
