Two Feared Dead, Banks Burnt in Delta Tanker Explosion

A petrol tanker explosion in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State, has reportedly claimed the lives of at least five people and destroyed valuable properties. The devastating incident occurred on Sunday along the Old Asaba-Lagos road.

According to the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, the explosion caused widespread damage, engulfing two banks—First Bank and Access Bank—in flames. Additionally, four houses, including an Anglican Church, and two vehicles were completely consumed by the inferno.

The petrol tanker, heavily loaded with fuel, reportedly overturned while the driver attempted to make a turn near First Bank. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the tanker burst into flames shortly after tipping over, creating a fiery path of destruction and trapping unfortunate victims.

One eyewitness at the scene described the harrowing experience to VANGUARD, stating: “We were told that the petrol tanker fell by the First Bank in Agbor when the driver tried to make a turn at the old Lagos/Asaba road. As I ran to the scene to find out, it was devastating. We are yet to see firefighters at the scenes; the fire is still burning as I speak to you now.”
