New Lagos Assembly Speaker Meranda Visits GAC For ‘Blessings’

The newly elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has wasted no time in reaching out to key political stakeholders following her historic election.

On Tuesday, just a day after being sworn in, Meranda met with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) to seek their blessings and ensure their support for her leadership.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting held at the Lagos House, Marina, Meranda explained her reasons for the visit. “We briefed the GAC about what happened at the state House of Assembly yesterday (Monday) and to seek their blessings, which we have gotten,” she said.

The GAC, the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, was established by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to provide strategic guidance on state matters. The meeting reportedly involved key principal officers and was held behind closed doors.

Although no official statement was given by the GAC, sources confirmed that their endorsement of Meranda’s leadership was a significant step toward solidifying her position.

Meranda, the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly, emphasized her intention to work closely with the council to ensure the smooth running of legislative affairs.

Her election follows the dramatic impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on Monday. Obasa was removed by his colleagues over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation.

Additionally, the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, was also removed, and all standing committees of the House were dissolved as part of the sweeping changes. These decisions mark a significant shift in the assembly’s leadership.
