A devastating fire razed Ahịa Mgbede Market in Nnewi, Anambra State, during the early hours of Tuesday, January 14, 2025. The blaze destroyed goods worth millions of naira, leaving dozens of shop owners in anguish and despair.
The fire, which broke out at approximately 2:15 a.m., consumed multiple shops and reduced valuable merchandise to ashes. Located opposite the New Motor Spare Parts Market, the area is a bustling hub of trade, now turned into a scene of wreckage and sorrow.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire raged for an extended period before firefighting units arrived. Despite the efforts of traders and sympathizers attempting to salvage items, much of the property was lost.
One of the affected traders, identified as Uche, recounted the heartbreak of the scene. “We arrived this morning to find our shops reduced to rubble. The loss is immeasurable and has sent shockwaves through the entire business community,” he lamented.
He also mentioned that a female trader, distraught by the scale of her losses, attempted to harm herself before being restrained and comforted by onlookers.
The Anambra State Fire Service, led by Fire Chief Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident in an official statement.
“The Anambra State Firefighters attended to a massive fire outbreak at Ahịa Mgbede,” the statement said. “Firemen and firefighting equipment from the Nnewi and Ogidi Fire Stations were immediately deployed to the scene. Our Firemen fought tirelessly to contain the fire, but it reignited later this morning. Efforts are ongoing to completely extinguish the fire.”
While the cause of the blaze remains unknown, authorities emphasized the importance of fire safety practices. Fire Chief Chiketa urged the public to remain vigilant and report fire emergencies promptly.
“Always be conscious of fire and avoid actions that could trigger outbreaks. Fire is dangerous but preventable,” he added.
Thankfully, no casualties have been reported so far. However, the economic and emotional toll on the traders and the broader business community is significant. Investigations into the cause of the fire are underway, and the public awaits more information on this tragic event.
