Enyimba International FC of Aba has been eliminated from the 2024/2025 CAF Confederation Cup following a 3-1 loss to Zamalek SC of Egypt on Sunday. The match, held at the Cairo International Stadium, confirmed Enyimba’s exit as they finished third in Group F with just five points from six matches.
The Nigerian club, known as the Peoples’ Elephant, faced an uphill battle even before the match. A disappointing 1-1 home draw against Al Masry in their previous fixture left them in a precarious position. Meanwhile, Zamalek’s victory secured their place at the top of the group with 14 points, showcasing their strength as title contenders.
Zamalek took control of the game early, with veteran midfielder Shikabala opening the scoring in the 29th minute. The Egyptian side extended their lead in the second half through Seifeddine Jaziri, who netted twice in quick succession, scoring in the 48th and 57th minutes. These goals left Enyimba trailing 3-0 and in need of a miracle.
Enyimba briefly found hope when Ihemekwele scored in the 63rd minute, narrowing the deficit to 3-1. However, Zamalek’s experienced players managed the remaining minutes efficiently, ensuring their victory and group leadership. This result leaves the Egyptian club as strong contenders heading into the knockout stages.
In another Group F match, Al Masry secured their quarter-final spot with a commanding 3-1 win over Black Bulls of Maputo. The star of the game was striker Fakhreddine Youssef, who delivered a hat-trick to lead his team to victory. Youssef’s goals came in the 22nd, 45th, and 47th minutes, giving Al Masry a comfortable cushion. Black Bulls responded with a goal from Rume Akporoh in the 57th minute, but it was not enough to change the outcome.
