President Bola Tinubu has officially approved the appointment of Dr. Kayode Opeifa as the new Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC). Dr. Opeifa, a seasoned professional in transportation management, brings years of experience to the role.
Dr. Opeifa previously served as the Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos State during the administration of former Governor Babatunde Fashola.
During his tenure, he became known for initiating transformative policies that modernized Lagos’ transportation infrastructure. His efforts in traffic management set a benchmark for urban transport systems across Africa, earning him significant recognition.
Beyond his work in Lagos, Dr. Opeifa played a key role at the federal level. Under former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s leadership, he was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Task Team (PTT) charged with addressing the chronic Apapa gridlock. This assignment involved decongesting one of the busiest port environments in West Africa, a challenge that required innovative solutions and strategic coordination.
Dr. Opeifa also served as Transport Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, further solidifying his reputation as an expert in the transportation sector.
With his appointment as NRC Managing Director, Dr. Opeifa succeeds Ben Iloanusi, who served as Acting Managing Director following the departure of Fidet Okhiria on October 18, 2024. Okhiria had completed his second four-year term, leaving the leadership position vacant until now.
