The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lieutenant General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (Rtd), has passed away at the age of 82. The news was formally announced by the Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, who expressed deep sorrow over the elder statesman’s death.
Useni, who reportedly died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, after a prolonged illness, was widely regarded as a key figure in Nigeria’s military and political history.
Governor Mutfwang, in a statement from Jos, described Useni’s death as a monumental loss, not just to his immediate family but to Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the country as a whole.
The Governor noted Useni’s remarkable career and unwavering commitment to the service of Nigeria. He reflected on the late General’s contributions, which spanned decades of military and political leadership.
Useni was recognized for his dedication to ensuring peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and his home state of Plateau. His efforts, the Governor said, will remain etched in the hearts of those he served.
Lt. General Useni held numerous key positions during his lifetime. In the military, he served as Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army and later as Minister of Transport. He was subsequently appointed Minister of the FCT, a role in which he is remembered for his impactful leadership.
After retiring from the military, Useni ventured into politics, where he continued to serve the nation. He held the position of Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was elected Senator for Plateau South under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.
Governor Mutfwang commended the General’s life of selflessness and service, noting that his compassion, kindness, and dedication to others left a lasting legacy.
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman,” the Governor stated.
He prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the bereaved family, the people of Plateau State, and the entire nation during this difficult time.
