Obasa: Security Screens Journalists, Others at Lagos Assembly Ahead Of Plenary

Heightened security measures were observed at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday as lawmakers prepared for their plenary session. Security officials, including policemen, conducted thorough screenings of journalists and other individuals attempting to access the complex.

At the main gate of the assembly, up to three police vehicles were stationed, while additional security vehicles were spotted inside the premises. Journalists seeking entry were directed to the second gate, where they were required to present valid identity cards. Those unable to identify themselves were denied access.

The plenary session comes amidst ongoing tension following a leadership dispute involving the former Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa.

Over the weekend, Obasa, who was removed from his position on January 13, 2025, under allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement, claimed he still held the office of Speaker. He argued that proper procedures had not been followed to formally remove him.

Speaking to journalists and supporters at Ikeja GRA on Saturday, Obasa maintained his innocence and challenged lawmakers to substantiate their claims. “If you want to claim that I’m corrupt, please prove it, let us see it,” he stated during his address.

The leadership tussle has created an unusual atmosphere at the assembly. On Monday, lawmakers were seen gathering for a photo session within the complex, notably without Obasa in attendance. The current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, who previously served as Obasa’s deputy, now leads the House.
