The newly appointed Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, officially took over the Speaker’s office on Monday. The move, which took place at the Lagos State House of Assembly Complex, was accompanied by a prayer session attended by her supporters.
Videos shared on social media captured the atmosphere as Meranda’s supporters gathered to praise God and pray for her success in the new role. The scenes reflected a mix of celebration and solemnity as she stepped into the position of leadership.
The assumption of office comes amid heightened security at the Assembly Complex, particularly ahead of the plenary session also scheduled for Monday. Security personnel were reportedly seen monitoring activities within and around the complex, signaling the tense political environment.
The tension stems from claims made by the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who stated over the weekend that he still holds the position of Speaker. Obasa’s assertion has fueled speculations of a potential confrontation during the plenary session.
It is worth noting that Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, after a majority of House members voted for his ouster. His removal followed allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation, which sparked significant debate within the Assembly.
In the wake of his removal, Mojisola Meranda was named as the new Speaker.
