The Federal Government has announced that it generated approximately N2.4 billion in revenue from marriage contracts in 2024 through its marriage registry at the Ministry of Interior. This significant figure was revealed by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo shared the financial success of the ministry, noting that the revenue collected from marriage contracts was part of a larger trend of increased earnings from various governmental services.
He explained that this income from the marriage registry comes as more Nigerians utilize the formal process for registering their marriages, reflecting a growing trend toward legal recognition and documentation of marital unions across the country.
In addition to the marriage registry revenue, Dr. Tunji-Ojo also highlighted another key source of income for the Ministry of Interior: expatriate quota applications. The ministry reportedly earned over N3.2 billion from this area. The expatriate quota system is a process through which foreign workers can be granted permission to work in Nigeria, and the revenue from this service is an important part of the country’s foreign labor regulation framework.
Overall, the minister pointed out that there was a 150 percent increase in the total revenue generated by the ministry in 2024.
