One Dead, Several Trapped as Two-Storey Building Collapses in Lekki

A two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Ikota area of Lekki, Lagos, on Monday, leaving one person dead and several others trapped beneath the rubble. Four individuals were rescued with varying degrees of injuries and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The incident, which occurred around 4 p.m., prompted an urgent response from emergency rescue teams, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), among others. Rescuers worked tirelessly to locate and save those still buried under the debris.

At the time of reporting, the exact cause of the collapse had yet to be determined. Authorities were still investigating the incident while rescue operations continued.

An eyewitness at the scene described how the structure crumbled suddenly, sending workers and bystanders into a panic. “The building just came down without warning. People started running and screaming, trying to help those inside,” the witness said.

Upon receiving the distress call, the NSCDC State Commandant, Mr. Adedotun Keshinro, directed a rapid deployment of the disaster management, rescue, and recovery team to the location. The team, led by the Eti-Osa Divisional Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corps David Oyende, coordinated efforts with other emergency responders to conduct search-and-rescue operations.

“The Command’s personnel at the scene have confirmed the successful rescue of four persons alive. Rescue operation is still ongoing,” Keshinro noted.
