The Organizing Secretary of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Abagun Omololu, has firmly stated that Chief Reuben Fasoranti remains the only legitimate national leader of the group. His remarks come in response to the recent appointment of Dele Farotimi as the National Organizing Secretary of a faction led by Pa Ayo Adebanjo.
Omololu made the statement in a press release issued on Wednesday, following the announcement made by the Adebanjo-led faction in a communiqué on Tuesday. The communiqué declared Farotimi’s appointment after a meeting held at Adebanjo’s residence in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.
Despite the development, Omololu emphasized that Fasoranti’s leadership within the main Afenifere remains unchallenged.
“I acknowledge the appointment of Dele Farotimi as the National Organizing Secretary of the faction led by Pa Adebanjo. However, it is important to clarify that there is only one authentic Afenifere, which remains under the leadership of Pa Reuben Fasoranti,” Omololu said. He continued by reinforcing that Afenifere remains dedicated to the original principles that have guided the group since its establishment.
The statement went on to reaffirm the group’s commitment to advancing the welfare of the Yoruba people and the overall progress of Nigeria. Omololu also noted the importance of maintaining the integrity of Afenifere’s leadership, stressing that Fasoranti’s position is the only one recognized by the majority of the group’s members.
Although Omololu acknowledged the right of individuals to form associations, he urged the public to distinguish between the real Afenifere and any other splinter groups that may seek to use the name for political motives.
“It is imperative that the public is aware of the distinction between the authentic Afenifere and any other groups that may claim the name for political purposes. As we continue our work, our focus remains on unity, justice, and the advancement of democratic values,” Omololu noted. He also expressed hope for cooperation among groups with similar ideals, despite differences in leadership.
The leadership struggle within Afenifere started in 2022 when Pa Ayo Adebanjo was appointed acting leader of the group. However, in January 2024, Afenifere rescinded the position of acting leader, effectively removing Adebanjo from the role. Following this, the group formed a new body called the Afenifere Elders Caucus, which listed Adebanjo among its members.
Since that time, Afenifere has been divided into two factions—one led by Fasoranti and the other by Adebanjo.
