Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have stated that there will be no reversal of the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. The lawmakers maintain that the decision was made in accordance with the law and the Nigerian Constitution.
On Monday, January 13, 2025, during a recess, 32 out of 39 lawmakers reconvened to remove Obasa from his position and elected his former deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, as the new Speaker. The move has sparked reactions, but the lawmakers insist that they followed all legal procedures required for such an action.
In a statement signed by Ogundipe Olukayode after the lawmakers’ visit to the Lagos Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Shangisha, Magodo, Lagos, they reaffirmed that their decision was in line with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Powers and Privileges Act.
They referred to Sections 92 and 96 of the Constitution, which define the legal steps for electing and removing a Speaker, and insisted that they adhered to these provisions.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people of Lagos.
“Any attempt to challenge this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution,” the lawmakers stated.
The lawmakers also acknowledged the DSS for handling their engagement professionally and ensuring a peaceful process. They confirmed that all lawmakers who had been invited or detained had been released.
Reaffirming their commitment to their legislative responsibilities, the Assembly urged all stakeholders, including the executive arm of government and the general public, to respect the legislative process and refrain from unnecessary interference.
