The body of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency, has been discovered near the Second Niger Bridge. Security operatives confirmed the tragic development on Thursday.
Azuka was kidnapped on December 24, 2024, while returning home for Christmas. He was abducted at gunpoint along Ugwunaobankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha, in a swift operation that lasted less than five minutes. Despite efforts by security agencies to locate him, he remained missing for over a month before his body was finally found.
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the discovery. He stated that a joint security team, including police and Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) operatives, found Azuka’s decomposing corpse during a routine patrol near the bridge.
Ikenga said, “In the early hours of today, 6/2/2025 at the Second Niger Bridge, the Joint Security Team comprising of Police and AVG Operatives on a mission to rescue abducted Hon. Azuka, Honourable State House of Assembly member representing Onitsha North, regrettably found his lifeless body at the scene.
“As soon as I get more details, I will keep you updated, as the joint security team have taken over the scene and operation is ongoing for the possible arrest of the suspects involved, please.”
Azuka, a chieftain of the Labour Party, had regained his mandate following a court ruling that overturned the election victory of Douglas Egbuna of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The ruling reinstated him as the rightful representative of Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Security agencies have launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the lawmaker’s abduction and murder. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activities that could help in the ongoing investigation.
