The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ebonyi State has announced the suspension of its indefinite strike in four out of seven local government areas (LGAs) where the industrial action was initially declared.
The strike was called off in Edda, Ebonyi, Ishielu, and Ezza North following what the union described as a positive response from local government authorities in those areas. However, the strike is set to continue in Ivo, Ezza South, and Ohaukwu LGAs due to the failure of their respective councils to meet the demands of the teachers’ union.
In a statement, the State Secretary of NUT, Comrade Bassey Asuquo, noted that the decision to suspend the strike in some LGAs was influenced by the cooperation received from local government officials. He explained that the leadership of the affected councils showed a willingness to address the concerns of teachers regarding their welfare and working conditions.
The statement also acknowledged the role of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru in addressing the crisis.
“The Union expresses its sincere gratitude to His Excellency, Rtd. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, Governor of Ebonyi State, for his recent intervention in the ongoing strike action. His proactive measures and demonstrated political will in addressing the welfare of workers and improving the education of underserved children in the state are highly commendable.
“The Union has resolved that the indefinite strike action will be suspended in four local government councils.”
The NUT further noted that the chairmen of the four LGAs where the strike was called off had shown commitment to meeting the union’s demands, which include better conditions for teachers and improved learning environments for students.
The statement also extended appreciation to teachers who remained committed to the cause, recognizing their patience and unity in pushing for better treatment.
“The State Leadership extends heartfelt thanks to all its members for their continued support and solidarity in this struggle. Their unwavering commitment has been pivotal in our efforts to secure improvements in the education sector.
“We urge all our members to remain resolute and continue working in the best interest of the education of our children, as we monitor the progress in the remaining local government areas,” the statement concluded.
