Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has dismissed rumors circulating on social media that he is responsible for the pregnancy of reality TV star, Nengi Hampson. The speculation, which has been widely shared online, falsely claimed that the former Big Brother Naija star had given birth to the governor’s child. Some even alleged that the governor has four wives.
On Monday, social media was flooded with claims that Nengi, 27, was expecting a child with Governor Diri. The rumors gained attention due to her appointment as the Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Development in 2020. However, the governor’s office has now spoken out to deny any connection between them beyond a professional relationship.
Responding to the allegations on Tuesday via Facebook, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Samuel Oredipe, strongly condemned the rumors. He described them as “fake news” spread by individuals trying to damage the governor’s reputation. He noted that these false claims were being used as a political tool, especially as the governor’s administration marked its fifth anniversary.
Oredipe stated, “Political enemies of His Excellency Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, are at work again. What a wicked set of people spreading falsehood on a day the Prosperity Administration commenced activities marking its 5th anniversary.”
He further clarified that Nengi and Governor Diri have no personal relationship beyond her official role. He also pointed out that while the government was focused on projects such as inaugurating a new road in Yenagoa, false stories were being spread to distract the public.
Nengi also took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to set the record straight. She denied the rumors, saying, “As much as I believe social media lies aren’t worth my time, I’ve come to accept that we live in a world where people are quick to spread lies without limits. So, let me be clear, I’m not pregnant for any governor.”
She also expressed her frustration that the rumors involved people she deeply respects, adding, “I’ve chosen to speak coz this isn’t just an attack on me, it involves people I hold in the highest regard, and I won’t allow a beautiful, personal part of my life be turned into something ugly. While I continue to mind my business and enjoy my pregnancy in peace, I wish y’all love and a happy Valentine’s weekend.”
