The Department of State Services (DSS) has finally granted access to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, after repeated complaints from his family and legal team.
For some time, Kanu’s lawyers and relatives had been denied visits, raising concerns about his well-being. His lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, had earlier raised alarm over the situation, stating that despite court orders allowing visits, they were blocked from seeing him at the DSS headquarters in Abuja.
However, after continued pressure, the DSS eventually permitted a visit. Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of the IPOB leader, confirmed that they were finally able to meet with him.
Speaking to Vanguard, Prince Kanu urged the DSS to follow court rulings that grant family members and lawyers the right to visit Kanu twice a week. He noted that refusing access not only affects his brother’s legal rights but also damages Nigeria’s reputation.
He further stated that Kanu is not the country’s problem but could be part of the solution. He called on the Federal Government to ensure that the DSS complies with the law regarding his brother’s detention.
