A tragic road accident occurred early Monday morning along the Ayetoro area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, claiming the lives of at least nine people and leaving three others injured.
The crash, which took place around 5:30 a.m., involved a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number UYY165ZY and a stationary truck with plate number DKA244XC.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson for the Ogun Sector Command, Florence Okpe, confirmed the incident while addressing reporters in Abeokuta.
She noted that the accident was caused by excessive speed and driver fatigue, which led to a loss of control before the bus collided with the stationary truck.
A total of 13 people were involved in the accident, consisting of 10 men and three women.
Okpe stated, “Nine were recorded killed (6 male and 3 female) while 3 were injured. The suspected causes of the fatal crash were excessive speed and fatigue which led to loss of control and the driver rammed into a stationary truck.”
The injured victims were quickly transported to Famobis Hospital in Mowe for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Idera Morgue in Sagamu.
The sector commander, Fasakin Akinwumi, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and noted the dangers of reckless driving. He also pointed out that some drivers fail to adhere to speed limits and ignore the necessary 15-minute rest break after four hours of continuous driving.
