The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has suspended Senator Kawu Sumaila, who represents the Kano South Senatorial District. Alongside him, three other key party members—Ali Madakin Gini, Sani Abdullahi Rogo, and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum—have also been suspended.
The announcement was made by the party’s state chairman, Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, during a press conference in Kano on Monday. He noted that the decision was based on allegations of anti-party activities involving the suspended members.
This development comes just a day after the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, hinted at the possibility of several senior NNPP members defecting to the APC.
Dungurawa stated that the affected individuals, who were elected under the NNPP platform, had been involved in actions that went against the party’s values and objectives. He criticized them for their lack of loyalty despite receiving the party’s backing during elections.
One of the major incidents that led to the suspension was the wedding of Senator Kawu Sumaila’s daughter, as well as the commissioning of projects at his university in Sumaila. The event was attended by key APC figures, including Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and Ganduje, while NNPP members were noticeably absent.
Dungurawa noted that it was surprising to see those who had previously opposed Sumaila now playing a significant role in his personal and political affairs. He suggested that such associations raised concerns about party loyalty and commitment.
